The accreditation process to start a new two year educational programme at Ghent University in September 2025 named: "Ships and Marine Technology" is about to be finished. When this educational programme is offically granted, then the Master of Science: Maritime Engineering will cease to exist.

Ships and Marine Technology
(Master of Science in Engineering)

This is how the program will look like:

As can be seen this contains advanced courses in (electro) mechanical engineering as well as course on floating devices and ship construction. With the master thesis topic a deeper knowledge in any of these topics can be achieved.

Master of Science: Maritime Engineering

Our division offers education in ships and marine technology. The objective is the formation of M. Sc. engineers having a specialist know-how in the design, construction, drive, operation and operating of maritime systems including ships and offshore installations.

This educational master programme is one of the possible five specialisations within the Master Electromechanical Engineering

We endeavour to train the students in the calculation and construction issues relating to large steel constructions and to offer them a thorough knowledge of the hydrostatics and hydrodynamics of floating and navigating objects.

The courses in the field of maritime constructions deal with various aspects of ships and other marine structures:

  • functions and general view of ship types and offshore constructions;
  • general arrangement of a ship;
  • function and constructive design of the hull parts;
  • strength and constructive design of the whole ship hull;
  • freeboard assessment and tonnage measurement;
  • shipyard practice;

Lectures concerning the construction of ships:

First master of electromechanical engineering, main subject: maritime engineering
Second master of electromechanical engineering, main subject: maritime engineering

A lot of our students do an internship in the summertime between first and second master year. So did Emiel with Exmar:

Master of civil engineering, major Dredging & Offshore Engineering

The lectures on Maritime hydrostatics and hydrodynamics give an overview of the static and dynamic behaviour of marine structures:

  • equilibrium, stability, damage calculations;
  • resistance and propulsion;
  • ship manoeuvring;
  • wave response;

Lectures on ship behaviour on water and hydrodynamics other hydrodynamics:
First master of electromechanical engineering, main subject: maritime engineering
Second master of electromechanical engineering, main subject: maritime engineering
Master of civil engineering, major Dredging & Offshore Engineering
Elective course

Acquire theoretical insight into the behaviour of ships in shallow and confined waters such as access channels, canals and harbours, and introduction to common methods for treating related problems. An introduction to the research topics is mentioned on this site.

Erasmus Mundus EMship

Since 2024 Ghent University is the coordinator of the Erasmus Mundus programme International Master in Advanced Design of Sustainable Ships and Offshore Structures or in short: "EMship". This is a full 2 year master programme with seven European partners. Much more information about this programme can be found on the dedicated website EMship.eu

The mobility can be simplified as follows:
